Baptist Pastor Shows Porn to the church during Sunday service – 19 June 2015

How many of us cringed with uneasiness when Greg showed that licentious video advert in church on Sunday the 7th of June ‘15? It made my stomach turn. When Greg asked the church what we thought the ad was all about, one thought came to mind; it was a reminder ‘sex sells’ and in some ways, knowingly or unknowingly Greg was selling sex and endorsing sinfulness in the church. Many of us had hoped that the leadership would take immediately disciplinary actions against Greg, but since that has not ensued, God-fearing folks in the church need to stand together and say, “Greg, enough is enough! You need to step down, repent and seek forgiveness before you can continue in the role of a pastor.”

The leadership received official complaints, which they passed on to Greg; but we must recognise that Greg’s apology the following week was hardly an apology befitting a Christian who has sinned against God and the church; it was more a justification rather than an apology. “If some of you were offended…” he said, “then I apologise.” The manner in which Greg apologised, the fault therein was passed to the people who were not “broad-minded” enough to accept Greg’s lecherous advert. But the reality is, if anyone claimed to be a Christian and was not extremely offended with the broadcasting of what can only be accurately labelled as ‘soft porn,’ then the Holy Spirit does not live in them, and their claim to being a true Christian is false. If you are a true Christian, the Holy Spirit will convict you of the sinful nature of such immoral ads and urge you to stand up against it. The Bible is clear that there must not even be a hint of any sexual immorality among the Christians.

Ephesians 5:3 But among you there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality, or of any kind of impurity, or of greed, because these are improper for God’s holy people.

We can be sure that Greg was aware that the video was inappropriate, he said so before showing it, but just stating that something “might offend some of you” does not make it alright to show it! If he knew it might offend some of us, it should have been sufficient reason not to show it, even if his moral standards are already compromised. What he presented that Sunday was not only offensive, it was downright sinful, disgusting and inappropriate.

For your information, the same advert was banned in NZ (see link below) as it was considered extremely inappropriate by the media watchdog. In their support for Greg, what some of our “matured”, “kind”, “soft-spoken”, and “godly” ladies in church leadership believed was appropriate for viewing in the church, was banned as inappropriate material to be shown during sports telecast by a secular media. What does that tell us about their allegiance?

It was not only sinful for Greg to show the video, but in showing a half naked woman, Greg possibly caused some men to fall in sin that morning.

Matthew 5:28 But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart.

This does not mean that every man who saw the video that morning lusted and sinned, but we can be sure that when sensual temptation is presented to an audience as large as that of our church, at least few are likely to fall in sin and in knowingly presenting temptation, Greg played the role of Satan in the church.

Some members may feel that lusting is not a weakness for them and that individuals who struggle with it just need to deal with it, and that’s partly true, but should a pastor present an occasion for church members to sin? More importantly, is the weakness of your brothers no longer a burden for you and you still claim to be a loving Christian? “This is how everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”
Let me tell you that I am a sinful man living in a fallen world and I’m susceptible to sensual sins and the Word of God tells me that this problem will be a struggle for almost every man till the day they die. I don’t ever want to look at such videos and it has the potential to make me fall in sin. Should you be so conceited as to think that you’ll never fall in sexual sin, remember what the word of God says about proud people with such insincere convictions.

1 Corinthians 10:12 Therefore let him who thinks he stands take heed that he does not fall.

Proverbs 20:9 Who can say, “I have kept my heart pure; I am clean and without sin”?

Men more godly than you and I have fallen in sin from looking at naked women. King David fell in sensual sin that caused his entire lineage to suffer for many generations. What began as a sin of lust gave birth to adultery, which led to deception and murder. He left a terrible example for his sons to emulate; and it started from “just looking” at a naked woman. This is King David, a man after God’s own heart and who, till then, had stayed committed to the Lord; if he fell, what chance do the men in Moonee Ponds Baptist Church have? What are the chances that your husband or your son did not lust that morning? I can tell you as a man that such vulgar videos play on our minds and can easily become the seed for sin to harbour. If you are a woman and you stand by Greg in his sinful actions, you have stood against your husbands and sons and have condoned a sinful act.

Greg read out staggering statistics of Christian men who are addicted to Porn which confirms to all that there most probably would have been men in the church that morning who are or were struggling with pornography, but Greg still chose to show what he knew to be an adult rated video in the church. What possessed him to do such a thing? We can be sure it’s not from God, for God does not tempt us to sin.

James 1:13 When tempted, no one should say, “God is tempting me.” For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone;

It’s the devil who tempted Adam and Eve in the Garden; it’s the devil that tempts us to sin every day, and it’s the devil who tempted even Christ to sin in the wilderness. Could it be the devil influencing Greg to show that video? It certainly was not God.

Luke 4:13 And when the devil had ended every temptation, he departed from Him (Christ) until an opportune time.

It has now come such to a state that there is very little point in discussing or uncovering the theological bungles in Greg’s sermons for there has not been even a single sermon where Greg has been completely and biblically accurate, but blatantly showing soft porn in the church during the service is a whole new low even for Greg, and this action just cannot be overlooked or tolerated. Pastors are meant to feed the sheep, not tempt and poison the flock! Greg does not have the heart or the gift of a pastor; his actions confirm that he is not a shepherd. To make the matter worse, there were children and young adults in the church that morning!

Mark 9:42 “If anyone causes one of these little ones–those who believe in me–to stumble, it would be better for them if a large millstone were hung around their neck and they were thrown into the sea.

If you personally enjoyed the video or condone it or think it was appropriate for the church, the Word of God says, you need to confess your sins, repent, and get right with God.

1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

If you realise it was wrong but still chose to support Greg, just because Greg in your mate, you have rejected Christ, but if you are deeply concerned about the Word of God and about your spiritual growth and that of the church, you cannot sit idle and let this pass.

To me, showing the video demonstrates that Greg is going through a severe spiritual crisis. It reveals that Greg is not walking closely with the Lord to discern what can and what cannot be fed to the flock (church). Greg’s wrong deduction that the video is appropriate to be viewed in church (with children) shows that his understanding of what is inappropriate or sexual and sinful is completely warped. His choice of words, his actions and obsession with such lewd matters demonstrates his possible weakness in this area. It also shows that Greg believes he is above God’s Word and will do whatever he wants in the church. For all that the video reveals about Greg, it tells us, members of the church that Greg needs to step down and sort his spiritual life out before he can step back into the role of a pastor.

Greg declared he looked at the video three times to be sure of what the advert was all about!! What??? The video title tells us what the advert was about! There were also comments confirming the purpose of the advert and other remarks discussing the video. Is it possible that Greg just liked looking at it, again and again, and again?

1 Corinthians 6:9-10 Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality, nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God.

You have been presented with what the Word of God say about such matters, the rest is between you and God, if Greg is your God, then follow him, if Christ is your Lord and Master then stand up for Christ. If you chose to support Greg without correcting him, know this that you have condemned Greg to his unrepentant and sinful ways and you are no longer serving God; but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord!

I pray that the Holy Spirit gives you the wisdom and courage to do what is needed to be done.

1 Timothy 5:20 But those elders who are sinning you are to reprove before everyone, so that the others may take warning.

This write-up is not intended to attack Greg, but it is simply an attempt to show the church and him, how and where Greg has sinned against God. This is a serious sin, but if Greg repents, we hope there will be a time of restoration but until such time, we as God fearing people just cannot ignore this deliberate sinful act.

Galatians 6:1 Brothers and sisters, if someone is caught in a sin, you who live by the Spirit should restore that person gently. But watch yourselves, or you also may be tempted.

    • Yes Steve, he showed the whole video , right infront of parents with their chidren, elderly , visitors and above all , before believers!
This commercial was banned in NZ due to it been too erotic for television. Word also has it that one of his deacons has questioned him about it, and Greg confessed to searching the internet for “sexy commercials ” and after searching and sifting through them , this was the one he settled on, Lord only knows what else he came accross, and when one considers “the one” that he finally settled on, it’s not a big stretch of imagination to suggest he has viewed much worse.

Further, one would think if a pastor can be so blind and let his guard down like this , it is also not a very big stretch to conclude he has seen much worse , heart is now hardened , conscience is seared, and to him this commercial was nothing in comparison to what he is used to seen .

That’s about all I know , and have concluded , maybe others can comment further ?
